A collection of tools that had taken a lifetime to build up were stolen, but the local community rallied round to support him. Across the UK, four out of five tradespeople have had their vans broken into and their tools stolen. It's a crime that has a huge impact on many businesses. We look at how technology such as body heat sensors are helping to crack down on van thieves.

Also on the programme, a new DNA technique helping forensic artists to sketch the faces of criminals.

In this episode, a train driver suffers facial injuries after a brick is hurled at his cab, shattering the window. The train was travelling at 70mph, but the driver manages to bring it safely to a standstill, despite his injuries.

A rise in the number of incidents like this has prompted one train company to start installing on-board technology aimed at making journeys safer for passengers and staff. The new features being unveiled include laser-imaging technology to scan the track and embankments – the same technology Nasa used to map the surface of the moon.

The programme, narrated by Rav Wilding, also looks at how victims of domestic abuse and stalking are being issued with forensic-marking sprays in a trial aimed at keeping women safe.

In this episode, we see how a family are left distraught when two of their dogs are stolen from the 'secure' garden. The family launch a massive social media appeal in a desperate attempt to find their two cocker spaniels.

They're not alone, with more than a thousand dog thefts reported every year. Most of these pets are never recovered, but a unique DNA database has been created in an attempt to reverse that trend and reunite more animals with rightful owners.

In this episode, we see the devastating consequences of a lorry driver taking his eyes off the road to scroll through his mobile phone. His vehicle ploughs into a line of queuing traffic, killing four people. The incident is captured on his dashcam.

This programme, narrated by Rav Wilding, looks at how cameras fitted with artificial intelligence software are being used to detect when a driver is using their mobile phone. These cameras are being trialled on UK roads and the hope is that they will help change driver behaviour and ultimately prevent more lives being lost.

One of the men, armed with a power tool, charges at the couple, but they stand their ground and capture the incident on their smartphone.

Catalytic converter thefts like this are a growing problem around the UK. This programme, narrated by Rav Wilding, looks at the ways in which the police, tech companies and car manufacturers are working together to combat it.

Also in this episode, a father whose daughter was murdered by her abusive and controlling ex-boyfriend launches a phone app he hopes will help keep other young women safe. And the parents of a hit-and-run victim help trace the driver who knocked their son down.

We see how thousands of repeat offenders – including burglars, robbers and thieves – are being fitted with electronic GPS tags, and in many cases their movements are being monitored 24/7. Probation officer Suzanne Bennett tells the programme that, in her experience, no-one wearing one of these tags has reoffended.

Also in this episode, West Midlands Police Sgt Tony Webb fears for his life when a man points what looks like a gun straight at him. But back-up quickly arrives, and body-worn video cameras capture the dramatic events, including the moment the man puts down his weapon and is detained. Meanwhile, shopkeepers in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, take a stand against a would-be robber hiding behind a Covid face mask. And police in Telford, Shropshire, hunt down a serial arsonist who set fire to five cars in two nights.

Millions of cars are fitted with dashcams, and the footage they capture is increasingly being used as evidence in cases of dangerous driving, like when two cars collided in a horrific head-on smash in the Cotswold town of Lechlade. One of the cars span out of control and hit bystander Nadine Wood, causing her life-changing injuries. Thanks to dashcam footage retrieved from one of the vehicles, it's quickly established that one of the drivers had jumped a red light and had been driving dangerously.

We also see how police dogs are being issued with body armour, giving them the same protection as their handlers.

Detectives in Hull go to great lengths to build up a digital trail of evidence that leads to two moped muggers who robbed an 85-year-old woman on her way home from church.

Paul Pugh was beaten up in a completely unprovoked and vicious attack outside a pub in south Wales. Paul was hospitalised for more than a year and has been left with life-changing injuries. Since the attack, he has been campaigning to raise awareness of the link between alcohol and violence. Now, drink-fuelled offenders are being told to wear an electronic monitoring device known as a sobriety tag. The tag monitors their sweat and alerts the Probation Service if they consume even a small amount of alcohol. So far, the tag appears to be working, with offenders staying sober 97 per cent of the time.
